Russia launched another major wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine on September 28 and into September 29, with Kyiv among the areas hit.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said more than 120 Shahed-type drones were launched during September 28, including around 90 newer jet-powered versions designed to fly faster than conventional drones.
Kyiv authorities said missile and drone debris fell across several districts of the capital, damaging residential buildings, private homes, vehicles and other structures.
In the Holosiivskyi district, drone debris landed on the roof of a six-storey residential building and caused a fire. Missile debris was also reported in the Solomianskyi district, while another fire broke out in Pecherskyi.
Authorities also discovered an unexploded missile warhead in a park area after the overnight attack.
Zelenskyy said the wider September 28 attacks killed nine people across Ukraine and injured more than 80. He also said jet-powered drones struck the National Academy of Sciences building and a hospital building in Kyiv.
Attacks were also reported in Dnipro, Odesa, Sumy and Kharkiv regions.
The growing use of faster jet-powered drones is creating another challenge for Ukraine’s air defences because the weapons give interception crews less time to detect and destroy them.
