Five Life Sciences Projects Receive Funding
The Life Sciences Fund is providing funding to five projects across Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.
Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation in Alberta will receive up to $21.9 million toward a $23.5 million initiative focused on antimicrobial supply resilience. The project aims to help secure broad-spectrum antibiotics and other antimicrobial drugs for priority pathogens, antimicrobial-resistant threats and combat-related infections.
Avivo Biomedical in British Columbia will receive up to $10.9 million toward a $33.9 million project focused on expanding blood transfusion and organ transplant capabilities. Its technology is designed to convert different blood types into Type O, including O negative.
Northern RNA in Alberta will receive up to $6 million toward a $9.5 million project establishing good manufacturing practice capacity for oligonucleotides and self-amplifying RNA. These technologies have applications in vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics.
Qidni Labs in Ontario will receive up to $12.5 million toward a $25 million project to finalize the design of portable and nearly waterless hemodialysis systems. The project includes pilot-scale manufacturing in Ontario, clinical studies and the collection of real-world battlefield data.
STEMCELL Technologies in British Columbia will receive up to $2.8 million toward a $2.9 million project to establish domestic manufacturing capacity for custom cell-culture media. The initiative is intended to strengthen biomanufacturing resilience and reduce reliance on foreign supply chains.
More Funding for Canada’s Health Security
The Life Sciences Fund is also providing $1.55 million over three years to each of five pan-Canadian research hubs.
The funding will extend existing pandemic-preparedness activities and support the development of dual-use technologies.

New Drug Shortage Monitoring Initiative
