Connor McDavid Is Chasing Gretzky. Vancouver Has Lost 15 of Its Last 16.
Connor McDavid keeps rewriting the record book. Vancouver keeps finding new ways to lose.
Edmonton beat the Canucks 4–2 at Rogers Place on Saturday night, with Leon Draisaitl scoring twice and McDavid collecting three assists.
Mattias Ekholm opened the scoring on a McDavid feed, but Max Sasson tied it late in the first. Jason Dickinson restored Edmonton's lead just 49 seconds into the third period.
Then came the familiar combination: McDavid set up Draisaitl for a power-play one-timer to make it 3–1. Brock Boeser pulled Vancouver within one late in the game, but Draisaitl's empty-netter ended the comeback hopes.
McDavid Is Closing In on NHL History
McDavid now has at least one point in all 18 games this season, leading the league with 47 points (10 goals, 37 assists).
Even more remarkable, he has recorded an assist in every game. His 18-game assist streak ties Adam Oates (1992-93) for the second-longest in NHL history. Only Wayne Gretzky, with 23 consecutive games, sits ahead of him.
Edmonton, now 12-3-3, also got 20 saves from Devon Levi in his return from injury.
Vancouver's Losing Streak Is Getting Worse
The Canucks are now 3-15-1, have lost five straight games and have been defeated in 15 of their past 16.
Leevi Meriläinen made 26 saves, but it wasn't enough to stop another Vancouver defeat.
The Twikup Take
McDavid is chasing Gretzky's record while Vancouver is chasing answers. One team has a superstar making history; the other has lost 15 of its last 16 games.
Edmonton is building momentum. Vancouver is running out of reasons to call this a slump.
