Toronto Fought Back Twice. Utah Still Found a Way.

Toronto tied it. Then tied it again.

And still lost.

Nick Schmaltz poked home a loose rebound on the power play at 13:12 of the third period to give the Utah Mammoth a 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday night.

The winner came seconds after Sergei Bobrovsky stretched across for a pad save on Clayton Keller's one-timer, leaving the puck sitting in the crease.

The power play followed a cross-checking penalty on Toronto defenceman Darren Raddysh at 11:42 of the third.

The Night Swung Back and Forth

Dylan Guenther opened the scoring on a power play at 19:47 of the first period.

Jack Roslovic tied it 1-1 at 10:20 of the second — extending his point streak to a career-high 7 games — before Andrew Peeke restored Utah's lead at 13:42.

A further Utah goal was waved off later in the period for goaltender interference.

Roslovic tied it again at 9:05 of the third, taking a pass from Auston Matthews at the blue line, skating in alone and beating Sebastian Cossa with a backhand deke.

But Utah's power play — which leads the NHL with 20 goals — decided the game a few minutes later.

Keller finished with three assists and Mikhail Sergachev had two for Utah (10-6-0), while Cossa made 27 saves.

Matthews had two assists for Toronto (8-7-2), and Bobrovsky stopped 33 shots in the loss.

It was Utah's second win over Toronto this season, after a 5-4 victory on October 13.

The Twikup Take

Toronto fought back twice and still left with nothing, undone by a late penalty against the league's most dangerous power play.

Utah, meanwhile, keeps alternating wins and losses — but beating the Leafs twice before mid-November is a statement from the NHL's newest team.
