Canadian Market Activity Picks Up
Canadian market activity strengthened in September, with TMX Group reporting sharp year-over-year increases in trading value and transactions across its equity marketplaces.
TMX Group released its September 2026 trading statistics on October 6, covering the Toronto Stock Exchange, TSX Venture Exchange, TSX Alpha Exchange and Montréal Exchange.
Across all TMX equity marketplaces, September trading value reached approximately C$439.7 billion, up 17.4% from August and 16.3% from September 2025. The number of transactions reached nearly 29 million, compared with about 27.3 million a year earlier.
TSX Trading Value Climbs
The Toronto Stock Exchange recorded approximately C$417.7 billion in trading value during September, up from C$384.7 billion in August and C$354.6 billion in September 2025.
TSX trading volume reached 9.54 billion shares during the month, while transactions totalled nearly 25 million. The exchange's average daily trading value was approximately C$19.9 billion.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index closed September at 35,235.87, below its August close of 36,270.48 but substantially above the 30,022.81 level recorded at the end of September 2025.
Activity Builds Through 2026
TMX's year-to-date figures provide an even broader picture. Across its equity marketplaces, trading value reached approximately C$3.92 trillion through September, representing a 35.7% increase from the same period in 2025.
Transactions also climbed 29.7% year over year to nearly 292 million.
TwikUp's Perspective
The September numbers point to a market that is attracting considerably more trading activity than a year ago, even though the benchmark index itself ended the month below its August level.
That distinction matters. Higher trading value and transaction counts can indicate stronger participation without necessarily meaning investors are universally more optimistic. Market activity can rise during periods of repositioning, volatility or changing expectations.
For Canadian investors, the more important trend may be the sustained year-to-date increase in trading activity. Whether that momentum continues into the final quarter will depend on economic data, interest-rate expectations, commodity markets and corporate developments.
