More Than 5,000 Years of Tradition. One Month to Celebrate Its Canadian Story.
November has arrived, bringing with it a month dedicated to celebrating Hindu history, culture and contributions across Canada.
From traditions stretching back more than five millennia to the communities shaping modern Canada, Hindu Heritage Month is an opportunity to discover a story that reaches far beyond temples, festivals and familiar celebrations.
Ottawa marked the beginning of the month on November 1 with an official statement from Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Heritage and Minister responsible for Official Languages.
His message was clear: the contributions of Hindu Canadians deserve recognition as an important part of Canada's shared identity.
What Ottawa Wants Canadians to Recognize
In his November 1 statement, Miller celebrated the "remarkable contributions of Hindus in Canada."
He also highlighted the extraordinary reach of Hinduism around the world.
More than 1 billion people practise Hinduism worldwide, following traditions and philosophies stretching back more than five millennia. At their heart are values that emphasize respect for life and the pursuit of harmony.
But this heritage isn't simply something to look back on.
In Canada, Hindu Canadians have helped shape communities through their ideas, talents and traditions. Miller described their stories as an important part of the country's shared identity and heritage.
He also emphasized that Hindu Heritage Month is an opportunity to appreciate the diversity that makes Canada stronger, celebrate shared values and spend time discovering the traditions that enrich the country.
His message ended with wishes for a month filled with discovery and time with loved ones.
Why November Became Hindu Heritage Month
This recognition didn't happen overnight.
Ottawa has recognized Hindu Heritage Month since 2022, when the House of Commons unanimously passed private member's motion M-42, introduced by MP Chandra Arya.
Ontario had already taken an earlier step.
The province's Hindu Heritage Month Act, 2016 proclaims November as Hindu Heritage Month in Ontario every year.
Together, these milestones helped establish November as a time to recognize Hindu history, traditions and contributions.
What Canadians Can Discover This Month
Hindu Heritage Month is about more than marking a date on the calendar.
Across the country, communities will celebrate through cultural events and programs highlighting Hindu history, traditions and contributions.
For Canadians, it is an opportunity to discover traditions they may already recognize, learn about those they have never encountered and better understand the people and stories behind them.
You don't have to follow a particular faith to appreciate another culture's history. Sometimes, understanding a neighbour's traditions is a meaningful way to understand Canada itself.
The Twikup Take
Canada's story isn't written by one culture, one tradition or one generation. It's built from millions of individual stories, and Hindu Canadians are an important part of that picture.
This November, go beyond the calendar. Discover a tradition, attend a cultural event or simply learn something new about a neighbour.
Because celebrating heritage isn't just about remembering where traditions came from. It's about understanding how they continue to shape the country we share.
Happy Hindu Heritage Month to everyone celebrating.
