GranMorgu Project Moves Ahead in Offshore Suriname
GranMorgu is a deep offshore oil project located approximately 150 kilometres off the coast of Suriname. TotalEnergies is the operator and is developing the project in partnership with APA Corporation and Staatsolie.
The project focuses on the Sapakara and Krabdagu oil fields in Block 58. TotalEnergies estimates that these fields contain nearly 760 million barrels of recoverable reserves.
The development received its Final Investment Decision in October 2024, marking a major step toward moving the discoveries into production.
Production Capacity Set at 220,000 Barrels Per Day
One of the most significant features of GranMorgu is its planned Floating Production, Storage and Offloading unit, commonly known as an FPSO.
The FPSO is designed to handle production of up to 220,000 barrels of oil per day. TotalEnergies says the unit is based on proven design principles used for offshore developments in similar environments.
According to TotalEnergies, the project is expected to maintain a production plateau of 220,000 barrels per day for four years.
First Oil Expected in the First Half of 2028
The latest official update from Staatsolie says GranMorgu is progressing as planned and that first oil remains expected in 2028.
Staatsolie’s 2025 annual report provides a more specific timeline, stating that first oil production is on track for the first half of 2028. TotalEnergies’ shareholder material also previously identified mid-2028 as the expected startup period.
This means the project is currently moving toward an important milestone for Suriname’s offshore energy sector.
FPSO Construction Is Underway
Construction of the GranMorgu FPSO is already progressing.
Staatsolie reported that the FPSO was approximately 50% complete at the end of 2025. Construction was taking place at shipyards in China and Malaysia, while preparations for other project components were also reported to be on schedule.
The FPSO will play a central role in processing, storing and transferring oil produced from the offshore fields.
Total Investment Estimated at US$10.5 Billion
TotalEnergies announced an estimated investment of approximately US$10.5 billion when it announced the Final Investment Decision for GranMorgu in October 2024.
Staatsolie is participating in the development with a 20% interest. TotalEnergies’ current project information lists TotalEnergies with 40%, APA Corporation with 40% and Staatsolie with 20%.
Staatsolie has said it raised financing to support its participation, including a US$516 million bond issuance and a US$1.6 billion loan from international and local banks and financial institutions.
Project Designed With Emissions-Reduction Measures
TotalEnergies says GranMorgu has been designed with several technologies intended to reduce operational emissions.
The FPSO is planned to be fully electric and will include systems for energy efficiency, waste-heat recovery and methane monitoring. The project is also designed without routine flaring, with associated gas intended to be reinjected into the reservoirs.
TotalEnergies has stated that the project is targeting Scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity below 16 kilograms of CO2 equivalent per barrel of oil equivalent.
What GranMorgu Means for Suriname
GranMorgu represents an important development for Suriname's offshore oil sector because the country has discovered significant offshore resources but has not yet begun offshore oil production.
TotalEnergies has described the project as a major investment in Suriname. The company has also said the development is expected to create thousands of jobs, including direct and indirect employment opportunities.
For Suriname, the start of offshore production would mark a new phase in the country's oil industry and could increase the importance of offshore resources to its economy.
What Happens Next?
The project is now moving through its construction and development stages ahead of the planned 2028 startup.
The completion of the FPSO, offshore infrastructure and other supporting facilities will be important milestones before production can begin.
Based on the latest official information from Staatsolie and TotalEnergies, GranMorgu remains on schedule for first oil in the first half of 2028.
Bottom Line
TotalEnergies’ GranMorgu project is progressing toward Suriname’s first offshore oil production. The Block 58 development is designed to produce up to 220,000 barrels per day, with nearly 760 million barrels of recoverable reserves identified across the Sapakara and Krabdagu fields.
With FPSO construction underway and first oil still targeted for the first half of 2028, the project is entering an important stage of development for Suriname’s offshore energy industry.
