A New Asylum Application Starts Today — and Half-Finished Claims Are Affected Most

Canada's asylum application changed on November 3, 2026, and if your claim is still sitting unfinished, today is the day to pay attention.

As part of its work to modernise the asylum process, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has changed how claims are submitted in the IRCC Portal — and what happens to you depends entirely on whether your claim was already in.

If Your Claim Is Still Unfinished

If you started a claim in the IRCC Portal but did not submit it by 11:59 p.m. ET on November 2, 2026, you are not done. Under the new application, you will need to:

  • Answer new questions added to the form
  • Review the answers you already gave

The good news: your personal information is saved. You do not start over — but you cannot simply press submit on the old form either.

If You Already Submitted

If your asylum claim was submitted in the IRCC Portal by 11:59 p.m. ET on November 2, 2026, nothing changes for now. IRCC says you do not need to provide new information unless the department asks you for it.

Why It Matters

Asylum — legally called refugee protection — is for people in Canada who meet the definition of a Convention refugee or a person in need of protection. For claimants mid-application, the difference between "submitted" and "almost submitted" now decides whether extra steps stand between them and a decision.

The Twikup Take

This is a paperwork change, not a policy wall — but paperwork is where real people's cases live. If your claim is sitting unfinished in the Portal, log in, answer the new questions and review the old ones. If you filed before the deadline, sit tight and wait for IRCC to come to you.
