He Asked for Water. Then He Allegedly Attacked the Paramedic Helping Someone Else.

A Vancouver paramedic was in the middle of helping a patient when a stranger walked up, asked for water — and allegedly struck the paramedic on the head.

It happened just after 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3, near West Hastings and Abbott streets, in the heart of the Downtown Eastside.

The paramedic suffered minor injuries. The man fled the scene.

Arrested One Block Away

Vancouver Police officers found the suspect just one block from where the alleged attack happened and arrested him.

Police are recommending assault charges against a 27-year-old man. The charges have not been laid at this stage — police say they are being recommended — and the man has not been named.

The People Who Show Up to Help

Paramedics working the Downtown Eastside answer calls in some of the toughest conditions in the city, often treating patients in the middle of busy sidewalks, exactly as this one was doing.

An attack like this one lands on someone whose entire job, at that moment, was helping somebody else.

The Twikup Take

A request for water turned into an alleged assault on a first responder mid-call — and the arrest came one block away.

The paramedic is recovering from minor injuries. The file is now with prosecutors.
