Alberta Is Pitching Europe. Edmonton Has a New Flight to Sell.

Alberta is taking its tourism pitch to Paris, Hamburg and Frankfurt this week. But there's a major selling point on the horizon for European travellers: a new direct flight between Frankfurt and Edmonton.

Minister Boitchenko and Travel Alberta officials are on a November 8–14 mission through France and Germany, meeting airlines, tour operators and travel media to promote Alberta as a year-round destination.

The numbers explain why these markets matter. In 2025, French visitors made 54,000 trips to Alberta and spent $49 million, while German visitors made 94,000 trips and spent $141 million. Spending increased 12% in both markets.

The headline prize: the province says Alberta will welcome a new direct flight between Frankfurt and Edmonton starting in 2027. The release does not name the airline or a start month. Alberta currently has about seven weekly WestJet flights between Paris and Calgary and about five weekly flights between Frankfurt and Calgary.

The mission includes meetings with Canada's ambassador to France, a Remembrance Day ceremony at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, a cinema showcase in Hamburg, and meetings in Frankfurt with Lufthansa/Discover Airlines, tour operator DERTOUR and Air Canada.

"France and Germany are important tourism markets for Alberta," the minister said. "By strengthening our relationships with airlines, tour operators and industry partners, we can welcome more visitors, grow Alberta's visitor economy, support Alberta businesses and jobs, and share Alberta's story with the world."

The Twikup Take

Alberta is spending time selling itself to Europe, but the real opportunity is already taking shape in Edmonton. A direct Frankfurt connection gives European travellers another gateway into the province — and gives Alberta another chance to turn international visitors into local spending.

The real test isn't how many meetings happen in Europe. It's how many visitors eventually make the trip to Alberta.
