Two People Stabbed Minutes Apart in Ottawa — Police Say Attacks Appear Random

Two people are fighting for their lives after separate stabbings unfolded minutes apart in downtown Ottawa early Thursday morning, with police saying the attacks appear to have been random.

The first incident happened at about 2:47 a.m. on October 1 on Rideau Street near Sussex Drive.

Ottawa Police say a woman was stabbed and then boarded an OC Transpo bus seeking safety, where she received medical treatment.

Just after 3 a.m., police received another call — this time reporting that a man had been stabbed near Daly Avenue and Waller Street.

A man was arrested near the scene of the second stabbing.

Both victims were transported to hospital in life-threatening condition.

Police said the attacks appear to have been random and that no other suspects are currently being sought. Authorities also said there was no known ongoing risk to public safety following the arrest.

Police identified the accused as 42-year-old Joachim Lessard of Ottawa.

He has been charged with two counts each of attempted murder, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon, along with other charges.

The allegations have not been proven in court.

The investigation remains ongoing, and Ottawa Police are asking anyone with information about the incidents to contact investigators.
