Google Expands Its Geothermal Energy Plans
Under the agreement, Google will purchase 396 MW of power from Fervo's Cape Station project.
Fervo will also offer Google an option to increase its electricity offtake by approximately 600 MW. If that option is exercised, Google's total potential offtake could reach nearly 1 GW by June 2030.
Fervo said final plans for a potential data center remain subject to engineering feasibility, state and local approvals, and commercial conditions.
Cape Station Expected to Come Online in 2028
Cape Station is an enhanced geothermal systems, or EGS, project located in Utah.
Fervo is developing Cape Station as a larger-scale geothermal project intended to deliver electricity around the clock. The company says it is deploying EGS at scale to build utility-scale power.
The new agreement is part of the expansion of Cape Station beyond its initial 100-MW phase as Fervo works to scale its operations and reduce development costs.
Why the Google Deal Matters
The agreement comes as Fervo says demand for reliable electricity is growing and large electricity users need resources that can operate around the clock.
Fervo says its enhanced geothermal systems are designed to deliver clean, reliable power around the clock.
For Google, the agreement adds to its geothermal energy plans. The companies previously worked together on Project Red in Nevada, Fervo's commercial pilot project that came online in 2023.
Fervo and Google Already Have a Geothermal Partnership
The latest agreement builds on an existing relationship between the two companies.
Fervo said its Project Red pilot in Nevada came online in 2023 and delivers power to the local grid, including Google's data centers in the state.
In June 2024, Fervo also signed a 115-MW power purchase agreement with Google and NV Energy. Fervo said that agreement helped pioneer Nevada's Clean Transition Tariff, enabling Google to bring additional geothermal power onto the Nevada grid while insulating everyday customers from the project's costs.
Potential Expansion Could Reach Nearly 1 GW
The 396-MW agreement is not necessarily the final size of Google's planned power purchase from Cape Station.
Fervo has offered Google an option for an additional approximately 600 MW of offtake. If fully exercised, the arrangement could bring Google's total potential offtake from the project to nearly 1 GW by June 2030.
However, the company noted that the potential expansion and data center plans depend on several factors, including engineering feasibility, regulatory approvals, and commercial conditions.
Geothermal Power and Data Center Demand
The deal highlights the connection Fervo sees between geothermal energy and the increasing electricity needs of data centers.

Fervo CEO and co-founder Tim Latimer said the agreement “reinforces that EGS is ready to power the next generation of computing infrastructure.”
The company is continuing to develop its GeoCluster approach, which it describes as a modular, scalable power solution with flexible power-delivery pathways for data center development.
The Cape Station expansion is expected to help Fervo further standardize its project development process and reduce costs as it scales.
