Toronto FC finally turned pressure into three points at BMO Field.
The Reds defeated the New England Revolution 2-1 on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, with new midfielder Niklas Dorsch scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal. The victory moved Toronto FC to 4 wins, 7 losses and 8 draws for 20 points in the 2026 MLS season.
It was also a much-needed return to winning ways for Toronto after a difficult stretch of results.
Toronto strikes twice before halftime
New England started aggressively and created an early opportunity in the fifth minute, when Toronto goalkeeper Luka Gavran was forced into an important save on Peyton Miller's bicycle-kick attempt.
Toronto eventually found its breakthrough late in the first half.
Djordje Mihailovic found Canadian winger Theo Corbeanu on the right. Corbeanu's effort took a deflection off New England defender Will Sands and ended up in the net. The goal was officially recorded as a Sands own goal, giving Toronto a 1-0 lead.
The bigger moment arrived eight minutes later.
Dániel Sallói played the ball to Mihailovic near the top of the penalty area, and Mihailovic laid it off for Dorsch. The German midfielder produced a curling strike that beat New England goalkeeper Matt Turner and found the top corner.
It was Dorsch's first goal for Toronto FC after joining the club from 1. FC Heidenheim on July 28.
Toronto went into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
Dorsch makes an early impact for Toronto FC
Dorsch's first Toronto goal could hardly have arrived at a better time.
The midfielder became the seventh Toronto FC player to score his first goal for the club during the 2026 MLS season, according to Toronto FC's post-match notes.
The buildup also added to the production of two of Toronto's other attacking players.
Mihailovic's involvement took him to five MLS goal contributions this season — two goals and three assists. Sallói, meanwhile, reached a team-leading 10 goal contributions, with four goals and six assists since joining Toronto in February.
Toronto forced to finish with 10 players
The match became considerably more difficult for Toronto in the second half.
New England increased the pressure, but Toronto's defence produced several important interventions, including blocks from Richie Laryea and Josh Sargent.
Then, in the 76th minute, Mihailovic received a straight red card for a tackle on Carles Gil, leaving Toronto to protect its lead with 10 players.
New England eventually broke through in the 90th minute. Substitute Wilson Harris headed in a cross from Jack Harrison to cut Toronto's advantage to 2-1.
That set up a tense finish at BMO Field, but Toronto survived the remaining minutes without conceding an equalizer and secured all three points.
What the win means for Toronto FC
The result leaves Toronto FC at 4-7-8 with 20 points, while New England fell to 9-7-3 with 30 points.
More importantly for Toronto, the match delivered several encouraging signs: Dorsch opened his scoring account, the Reds generated two first-half goals and the team protected its advantage despite playing the final portion of the match a player down.
Toronto now has an opportunity to build on the result without leaving BMO Field.
The Reds' next match is against Charlotte FC on Wednesday, Aug. 19, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET in Toronto.
TwikUp Insight
The 2-1 scoreline tells only part of the story. Toronto's ability to protect its lead after Mihailovic's red card may be nearly as important as the three points themselves.
Dorsch's first goal is another storyline worth watching. A new midfielder producing a game-winner shortly after arriving gives Toronto an additional attacking option as the club enters the next stretch of its MLS schedule.
The question now is whether the victory becomes a one-night response or the beginning of sustained improvement at BMO Field.
