Key Takeaways

  • Starting in March 2027, the CRA plans to invite 1 million people to file 2026 taxes with a pre-filled return.
  • Eligible people needed to file their 2025 return, have a CRA account and select electronic mail by October 31, 2026.
  • A pre-filled return still requires review and submission; SimpleFile remains a free option without an invitation.

Imagine opening your tax return with information the CRA already has filled in.

No starting from a blank page. No hunting through every box. Less time entering information the CRA already has.

Starting in March 2027, the Canada Revenue Agency will invite 1 million eligible individuals to file their 2026 taxes using a pre-filled return inside their CRA account.

The service is free. The CRA uses information already on file to pre-fill a return for you. You check what has been pre-filled, update anything, add anything missing, accept and submit it yourself.

One important catch: the CRA pre-fills the return, but you still have to file it.

The October 31 Deadline: Four Boxes to Tick

The eligibility checklist had to be in place by October 31, 2026. You may be invited if you:

  • Filed your 2025 tax return by October 31, 2026
  • Have a lower income and simple, non-taxable situation
  • Have a CRA account
  • Set your correspondence preference in that account to "electronic mail"

The CRA told people to sign in, update their information and set that preference by Oct. 31. Meeting the checklist does not guarantee an invitation. It gives you a chance to be invited.

Why Getting Your Taxes Done Matters Beyond Tax Season

Filing a return is not just about whether you owe money or get a refund. You need to file a return every year to receive — or keep receiving — the benefit and credit payments you are entitled to.

A return that arrives mostly filled in may make filing easier for simple filers who might otherwise skip filing and miss payments.

The CRA says that by 2029, 5.5 million individuals will get an invitation to file their 2028 taxes this way, up from 1 million invitations for 2026 tax returns.

Missed October 31? You Still Have Another Option

The pre-filled return is not the only free option. The CRA's existing SimpleFile service is offered to people with a lower income and a simple tax situation in three ways:

  • Digital
  • By phone
  • By paper

So even without an invitation, there is another route.

The Twikup Take

The biggest win here is not that the CRA is doing your taxes for you — it is that millions of simple filers could find taxes easier.

If your Oct. 31 checklist was complete, watch your CRA account in March 2027. You may receive an invitation to use a pre-filled return.
